Spring Decor: Kitchen and Dining room

I think I have FINALLY purged all of the Christmas trees and decor from the farmhouse. I don’t know if it was because the snow just kept coming (WELL into March) or if I just woke up on the lazy side of the bed this month, but I was in NO hurry to pull out the spring decor around here. Now that I have FINALLY started though…it feels SOOOO good. There is just SOMETHING about Spring…like a fresh start after a LONG season of BLECH.

I started by simplifying and adding spring decor in my dining nook. These open shelves are ALWAYS my favorite to decorate. With very little effort, I can change the whole look of both my dining room and my kitchen…and since my house is very open concept, it also shows up through our living room and hallways…SCORE!!! After the bright red of Christmas, I decided to go very simple and focus on lots of white with touches of green.

BUDGET TIP: When starting a new season, start by shopping your house. Decor can get expensive, so start with what you have. The only thing I purchased new in this photo was the small tobacco basket from Walmart for $2.50 (and this look would not have been any less cohesive without it…but I COULD NOT say no to it!!). Disclaimer: I also bought this scale, but I would have bought it no matter what….Spring, Summer, Hanukkah, Blood Moon…AND I will be using it for years. It is VERY TEMPTING to run out and buy seasonal decor (trust me I KNOW!!) But try buying pieces that you can use throughout many seasons and then SPRINKLING in holiday pieces.

I started with my enamelware pitchers, added in a few cake stands to fill holes, a couple signs of course for fun, and then a few pops of green to add some SPRING. Easy peasy. The best part about keeping things LESS holiday themed, is they last much longer. I can keep this look up all they way through Spring, Easter, Summer, and even add a few pumpkins in and keep it up through Fall.

DECOR TIP: Use household items as a base for your decor. Use your cute serving pieces or fun mixing bowls in a kitchen vignette. You are storing them in cupboards and drawers, why now show them off??? Trust me, these pitchers have NEVER been used for a dinner party…and there has NEVER been a cake on that stand…haha!!

As soon as things start to sprout OUTSIDE, I always start to add more pops of plant life INSIDE.  I am a total BLACK THUMB, so for me this means faux plants.  I know faux plants have gotten a bad rap over the years, but over the last few years, faux greenery has gotten SOOO good.  They look fresh and realistic…but make sure you are picky about the ones you use.

TIP: It is best to stay away from faux plants that look plastic-y.  Choose faux plants with a texture if possible or ones made of silky fabric-like material.  They look less fake.  Also, by putting fake plants into a vase or planter (or using them in a way you would use a real flower), they tend to look more lifelike.  Also, groups of faux greenery look MUCH better than single stems. Bunch them together…mix and match…or even clip the stems.

I do not have the time or the money to do a COMPLETE overhaul to my kitchen decor each time the seasons change, but by changing out a few pieces, I can get a complete new look. For example, I did not change A THING on the top of my cabinets from Christmas to Spring. I simply exchanged small Christmas trees for lavender and lamb’s ear. I also moved the large wooden box from my table centerpiece to my counter…exchanging evergreen for lavender. It cost me ZERO money, and gave me a VERY different look. I know we live in a society DRIVEN by social media and the desire to have “what they have.” But decorating DOES NOT have to cost a fortune.

BUDGET TIP: If you cannot afford to buy new decor, start SMALL. Begin by decorating ONE tray for each season. Or ONE corner of your kitchen. Maybe and entryway table. When I first started, I decorated and re-decorated my entryway in a million different ways. I changed it out for each holiday, all the while, never touching the rest of my house. I quickly learned how to get the look I wanted on a small scale, and then invited my kitchen counter tops to the party. You can still get the fun of holiday decor, but do NOT have to buy a bunch of new stuff.

I always get asked what my favorite trend is for each season. This year I am ALL ABOUT botanical prints. We have an apple and cherry print on the walls at ORCHARDSLOPE for obvious reasons, but there are sooooo many cool ones to choose from. These tiny herb prints are from WALMART, and blended RIGHT in with my simple whites and greens this year. I have a plan hatching in my head right now to add a few botanical prints into my decor before Spring is over, but it all depends on TWO things…TIME and MONEY of course…haha. Only about 1 out of 10 of my big ideas ever make it out into the world because of those two jerks:(
