Book Review: EVERLESS by Sara Holland

Everless by Sara Holland

You know that old adage, TIME IS MONEY?? Well in the book EVERLESS by Sara Holland, time actually IS money!!

Jules lives in the kingdom of Sempera where time is used as currency and only the aristocracy have enough of it. When money is owed, the TIME is extracted from the debtor in the form of blood. Then the iron is rendered from the blood and becomes iron currency. These irons can then be consumed, giving the person MORE time. Both cool and slightly revolting right?? Of course, there is a great discrepancy between the wealthy who have ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, and those who are LITERALLY giving their life up bit by bit just to survive. And our main character, Jules, is running out of time. When her father becomes ill and has VERY little time left, Jules is forced to become a servant to the Gerlings at EVERLESS in order to gain him more time. ANDDDD that is really where the story begins…

I was SOOO intrigued by the premise of EVERLESS…the whole blood-iron concept kinda blew my mind actually. And even though there were parts of this book that played out a little flat for me, OVERALL I enjoyed it. Mostly I just wanted the characters to be MORE…more developed, more dimensional, more complex…JUST more. As much as I liked the storyline, I really never got a great inner picture of the characters, the Everless Estate, or the kingdom of Sempera. Usually, in YA novels, they tend to lean towards OVERLY descriptive and complex characters…so maybe I am just spoiled:)

BUT on the positive side, the plot twists in Everless got me. It does not happen often, but I DID NOT see the ending coming AT ALL. And the major plot twist at the end means I will FOR SURE be reading the second book in this series. I LOVE a good surprise and I cannot wait to find out what EVERMORE has in store for me!!

pin it for later!!
